Primary and secondary constitutions

Composite Constitutional Medicine (복합체질의학, 複合體質醫學) was developed by Dr. Lee Eun Won in Korea. It has the same root as Four Big Type Constitutional Medicine (사상체질의학, 四象體質醫學) but with one huge difference is the imbalance of the organs for one of the four types, and its theory is more detailed and advanced.

The 70 / 30 principle

Composite Constitutional Medicine differentiates humanity into the combination of the primary (주체질, 主體質) and secondary (객체질, 客體質) constitutions: Whereas, Four Big Type Constitutional Medicine differentiates humanity into just four primary constitutions. Four Big Type Constitutional Medicine’s theory is a groundbreaking and revolutionary theory. However, it is an incomplete theory, even the original author order the later generation to improve upon it. One of the many reasons is that it never mentioned the imbalance of the rest of the organs. However, Composite Constitutional Medicine delves into the imbalance of the rest of the organs.

The Sun, the Moon, and time

The core principle of Composite Constitutional Medicine is that every individual is composed of 70% primary constitution and 30% secondary constitution. The imbalance (hyper and hypo functions) of the organs is the determining factor of an individual’s constitution differentiation. The imbalance of the organs is not a one dimensional (fixed) instead, the imbalance of the organs is the two dimensional (changeable). The principles of the combination of the primary and secondary constitutions mimic the human body having one dominant side (either the right or the left) with one weaker side.

Composite nature of the constitution is due to the Sun and Moon’s influence on the human body, and earth. The Sun and Moon transmit different kinds of energy during the different periods of the day; the Sun transmits the clockwise circulating energy while the Moon transmits the counter-clockwise rotating energy. The human body continually tries to maintain the standard imbalance of the organs under the rotating force of the Earth, the moon’s rotation around the earth, and the earth’s revolution around the Sun, this is called “Time.” For these reasons, the imbalance of the organs goes through systemic changes according to the systematically alternating influence of Sun or the Moon’s energy (time changes) upon the human body and the earth.

During the periods when the Sun’s energy governs the earth, then the imbalance of the organ presents as the primary constitution. Whereas during the periods when the Moon energy governs the earth, then the imbalance of the organs shows as the secondary constitution.
